With frequent droughts and water shortages in many areas of the world, wastewater can be considered as a valuable resource of water if reused. However, wastewater contains many harmful substances and pollutants, therefore it cannot be recycled or released back into the environment until it is treated properly.

The type of wastewater treatment system depends mainly on the characteristics of the sewage, the scale of the WW plant, in addition to the end use of treated water.

For individual properties, small to medium businesses and communities, and in some areas where buildings are not connected to the main sewers, the most suitable method is to use pre-manufactured treatment facilities, such as wastewater purification units and packaged treatment plants. They work on the same principle as the collective centralized WW treatment plants, but in a miniaturized version for discrete use.
